Privacy policy

Last updated July 18, 2026

This policy explains how the Selects app for iPhone handles your data. Selects is a photo‑curation app: it groups your near‑identical photos into photoshoots, pre‑picks the best ones, and lets you clear the rest. It is developed by Václav Trnka (the “developer”, “I”), based in the Czech Republic.

The short version. Selects works on your iPhone. Your photos are analyzed on‑device and are never uploaded or sent anywhere. There is no account and no advertising.

The app does collect anonymous, aggregate usage statistics to help improve it. These are never your photos and are never tied to you, and you can turn them off at any time in Settings.

Your photos stay on your iPhone

When you grant Photos access, Selects reads your library on your device to find photoshoots and score which shots are sharpest and most distinct. All of this analysis happens locally on your device.

Your photos and thumbnails never leave your device, and nothing about your library is ever sent to the developer. The one small exception is described under Place names below.

You can grant full or limited access, and change it at any time in the iOS Settings app. When you choose to remove photos, Selects hands them to iOS’s own delete, so they go to your Recently Deleted album and remain recoverable for 30 days. Nothing is ever removed without your confirmation.

Place names

To label a photoshoot with where it happened (for example, “Prague”), Selects asks Apple’s location services to turn a location into a place name. For this one lookup it sends only a coarse, rounded coordinate (about a kilometer, enough for a city name) to Apple; it never sends your photos or their exact locations, and nothing is sent to the developer.

Anonymous usage statistics

To understand how the app is used and where it can be improved, Selects collects anonymous, aggregate usage statistics through PostHog, hosted in the European Union. These describe general activity in the app, such as which features are used, as fixed categories and aggregate counts.

They never include your photos or anything that could identify you or your library, and Selects does not build advertising profiles, use the advertising identifier (IDFA), track you across other apps or websites, or record your screen.

Your choice. Anonymous statistics are on by default. You can turn them off at any time in the app’s privacy settings, and the app works exactly the same either way.

Crash and error reports

Selects sends anonymous crash and error diagnostics (also through PostHog) so that bugs can be found and fixed. These reports are technical only, describing what failed and where, and are scrubbed of anything that could identify your photos. They follow the same on‑by‑default opt‑out as usage statistics above.

No account, no ads, no selling

Selects has no sign‑up and no user accounts. It shows no advertising, and your data is never sold, rented, or shared with data brokers.

Who your data reaches

Only two companies are involved, and neither receives your photos:

  • Apple: the App Store and the on‑device services the app relies on, under the Apple Privacy Policy.
  • PostHog: the EU‑hosted analytics that receive the anonymous events above, under the PostHog Privacy Policy.

Data retention

The developer keeps no personal data about you, because none is collected. The anonymous events are retained by PostHog under its standard retention settings. Turning off analytics in Settings stops any further events from being sent.

Children

Selects is not directed to children, and it does not knowingly collect data from children.

Your rights

Because the statistics Selects collects are anonymous and are not linked to your identity, the developer generally cannot single out, retrieve, or delete an individual person’s data. You remain in full control on the device: you can turn analytics off at any time in Settings, and revoke Photos access in the iOS Settings app. If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK and have questions about your rights under the GDPR, please get in touch.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date at the top.
