Selects press kit
Everything you need to write about Selects: descriptions, facts, numbers, screenshots, videos, the app icon and a portrait. Use any of it freely in coverage.
In one line
Selects is a free iPhone app that finds the photos you took over and over and pre‑picks the keepers, so you can clear the rest with a tap.
Short description
About 50 words
Selects is a free iPhone app that keeps a photo library in good shape. It groups near‑identical photos into photoshoots and pre‑picks the keepers, sorts the library by what takes the most space, and lets you swipe through photos one at a time. It also compresses big videos. Everything runs on the iPhone.
Long description
About 150 words
Most people shoot the same moment ten times to get one good photo, and keep all ten. Selects does the tedious first pass. It finds those photoshoots and pre‑picks the keepers: the sharpest photo, plus the one that is genuinely different, so the moment isn’t lost. Two more ways in sit beside it. Tidy up sorts the whole library into lists of what takes the most space: large videos, exact copies, bursts, screenshots, screen recordings, blurry and low‑light photos. Swipe shows one photo at a time: left to remove, right to keep. A big video can get a compressed copy instead of going, with a real preview first and the original kept until you decide. Nothing is removed until you confirm, and removed photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. The photos are analyzed on the iPhone with Apple’s Vision framework and never leave it. Selects is free, with no account, no subscription and no ads.
The maker
Selects is made by Václav Trnka, a senior product manager based in Czechia who has built and scaled apps internationally. On the side, Václav builds solutions for problems from real life. Selects started as one of them: the tool missing from a personal library full of near‑duplicates.
Many apps in this category are cleaners sold on weekly subscriptions. Selects went the other way: it is free, with no account, no ads and nothing locked, and an optional tip for anyone who wants to support it. It’s built with the help of AI tools, which is what makes it possible for one person to design, test and look after an app this carefully, and still keep it free.
“I build things for problems I run into in real life. This one was my own photo library: the same shot ten times over, and no app that would pick the keepers without asking for a subscription.”

What it does
- Curate picks the keepers. Near‑identical photos are grouped into photoshoots, a month or an album at a time, with the best few already chosen.
- Tidy up shows what takes the most space. Large videos, exact copies, bursts, screenshots, screen recordings, blurry and low‑light photos and utility photos, each in its own list.
- Swipe keeps it simple. One photo at a time: left to remove, right to keep, up to add it to Favorites.
- Compresses big videos. A smaller copy with a real preview, and the original stays until you choose to remove it.
- Stays on the iPhone. Photos are analyzed on the iPhone and never leave it. Nothing is removed until you confirm.
